FAQs
Questions
Most visitors ask the same things.
We've answered them here for you.
What should I see first?
Start where your interests lie. Music lovers head to the venues. Nature seekers find the parks. History matters to some more than others.
Is Austin Tourist Park dog friendly?
Yes. Dogs are welcome when staying on our powered and unpowered caravan and camping sites, subject to Austin Tourist Park's pet guidelines.
We ask that dogs are appropriately contained or kept on lead, aren't left unattended, and don't disturb other guests.
Can my dog stay inside a cabin?
No. Our cabins aren't pet-friendly, so dogs aren't permitted inside.
However, let us know you're travelling with your dog when you book. Where availability allows, we can arrange a cabin with a verandah so you and your four-legged family member have somewhere outside to sit together.
Have a chat with our team before booking and we'll help you work out the best option for your stay.
Can I leave my dog at my site while I go sightseeing?
No. Dogs shouldn't be left unattended at your site.
If there's an attraction you'd particularly like to visit that doesn't allow dogs, talk to us. We may be able to help you plan a day that works for everyone.
Where can my dog have a run in Tamworth?
Tamworth has designated off-leash areas, including the fenced dog activity area at Powerhouse Park in Carthage Street, which also has agility equipment.
Ask our team about Riverside Fields and other good options when you arrive.
What can I do with my dog in Tamworth?
Plenty.
Explore outdoor spaces such as Hands of Fame Park, find somewhere for a walk, visit an off-leash area, discover public art or make a picnic part of the day.
You can also use Tamworth as your base for dog-friendly regional drives towards places such as Nundle, Chaffey Dam, Manilla, Split Rock Dam and Barraba.
Are there dog-friendly cafés and places to eat in Tamworth?
Yes, there are places around Tamworth where dogs can join you in outdoor dining areas.
Because individual pet policies and opening hours can change, ask us for our current recommendations when you arrive.
Can I take my dog to Chaffey Dam?
Yes. Dogs are permitted at Chaffey Dam but need to be kept on lead.
It's a good addition to a Nundle day trip and gives everyone a chance to get out of the car and enjoy some country scenery.
What should I take when exploring with my dog?
The usual road-trip essentials make life much easier: a lead, water and bowl, waste bags, food or treats and anything else your dog needs to travel comfortably.
Tamworth can get very hot during summer, so plan outdoor adventures around the weather and make sure your dog always has access to water and shade.
What are the best family attractions in Tamworth?
It depends on what your family enjoys.
For an easy Tamworth adventure, we'd combine places such as the Big Golden Guitar, Hands of Fame Park, Tamworth Marsupial Park, Tamworth Regional Playground and Oxley Scenic Lookout.
Families interested in history and how things work should also consider the Tamworth Powerstation Museum.
What can families with teenagers do in Tamworth?
Tamworth has plenty for older children and teenagers, including escape rooms, ten-pin bowling, arcade games and movies.
But don't assume teenagers won't enjoy the regional adventures too. Street art, silo art, Bob's Shed, photography, lookouts and choosing the day's route can give everyone something to get involved in.
Let the wallet eaters choose occasionally.
You might be surprised.
Are there free family activities in Tamworth?
Yes.
Hands of Fame Park, Tamworth Marsupial Park, Tamworth Regional Playground, the Big Golden Guitar photo stop and Oxley Scenic Lookout are some good places to start.
A picnic and a regional drive can also make a great family day without needing an admission ticket at every stop.
What are some good family day trips from Tamworth?
The Liverpool Plains, Barraba and Manilla, and Gunnedah and Lake Keepit all make excellent family adventures from Tamworth.
Rather than simply driving to one attraction and back, we like building a few discoveries, a picnic stop and something fun into the day.
Ask our team for ideas when you arrive.
Where is a good place to watch sunset with the family in Tamworth?
We'd choose Oxley Scenic Lookout.
Try arriving around 10–15 minutes before sunset and stay for a little while after the sun disappears. If there's some cloud around, you may get even better colour.
Take the camera.
Is Austin Tourist Park good for families?
We reckon so.
Austin Tourist Park offers cabins, powered sites and unpowered camping sites in Tamworth, with a swimming pool, playground, pedal carts, camp kitchen and BBQ facilities to enjoy between adventures.
If you're not sure which accommodation option will work best for your family, have a chat with our team.
What are some good attractions for groups in Tamworth?
It depends very much on the interests of your group.
The Big Golden Guitar and Tamworth's country music attractions are obvious places to start, while the Tamworth Powerstation Museum, Tamworth Regional Astronomy Centre and Powerhouse Motorcycle Museum can be particularly good for special-interest groups.
Oxley Scenic Lookout and outdoor attractions can also work well when you're looking for something relaxed that everyone can experience together.
Can Austin Tourist Park help organise group activities?
Yes.
Our Gatherings & Connections Officer can help with ideas for activities and experiences that suit your group and, where possible, help make local connections.
Tell us what you're interested in, how many people you've got and what sort of experience you're hoping for.
We may already know just the person to talk to.
Can you help us plan a group drive from Tamworth?
Absolutely.
This can be particularly useful for motor vehicle clubs.
Tell us what you're driving, how far you'd like to travel, whether the group is comfortable with unsealed roads and what sort of stops you'd like along the way.
We'll help with ideas.
And Frank may know a road.
Actually, Frank almost certainly knows a road.
