WHAT WE OFFER

Make memories together

Family holidays aren't really about how many things you manage to squeeze into the itinerary.

They're the swims before dinner, the pedal-cart races, the ridiculous photos, the day trips, the BBQs and the unexpected things everyone ends up talking about on the way home.

At Austin, you can choose a cabin, powered site or unpowered site and make us your home base for exploring Tamworth and the region. Head out and have an adventure together — then come home for a swim, a play or absolutely nothing at all.

Why stay at Austin?

Different ways to stay

Cabins, powered sites and unpowered camping give families options to suit the way they travel.

Fun without leaving the park

There's a swimming pool, children's wading pool, playground and our ever-popular pedal carts.

The practical stuff is covered

Camp kitchen, BBQs, laundry and amenities make family travel that little bit easier.

Plenty of adventures nearby

From animals and playgrounds to museums, lookouts, art, games and family road trips, there's plenty to discover together.

Room for downtime

Not every minute needs an activity. Swim, cook a BBQ, sit outside and enjoy simply being on holidays.

Ask us what to do tomorrow

Tell us who's travelling and what everyone enjoys, and we'll help you find an adventure that fits.

Family adventures aren't really about how many attractions you can tick off a list.

They're about the things you discover together.

The ridiculous family photo. The unexpected place everyone loved. The picnic with a view. The competition that became far more serious than anyone intended. The road you hadn't planned on taking. The ice cream stop on the way home.

Those are the bits you'll still be talking about years later.

At Austin Tourist Park, we're an independently operated, family-owned tourist park beside the Peel River in Tamworth, NSW, and we think Tamworth is a cracking place to start your next family adventure. Whether you're travelling with little adventurers, teenagers, grandparents or several generations all holidaying together, there's plenty to discover.

Come for the adventure.
Stay for the memories you make along the way.

Amenities

Nobody wants to trek halfway across a caravan park when nature calls. With four amenities areas located around Austin Tourist Park, nowhere in the park is more than approximately 50 metres from an amenities block.

Our main amenities area includes separate men's and ladies' toilets and showers, as well as a family bathroom and our laundry. Around the park you'll also find additional men's and ladies' amenities and a small ensuite-style block with four individual bathrooms. Some facilities may not always be open, depending on park operations and works underway.

If you've got particular accessibility or bathroom requirements, have a chat with us before you arrive so we can help identify the most suitable accommodation or site location for you.

Camp Kitchen image

Camp Kitchen & BBQs

Sometimes dinner needs to be an event.
Other times it needs to be sausages on the BBQ and done.

Our camp kitchen gives caravan and camping guests a handy place to prepare a meal without having to unpack half the van. You'll find a fridge, freezer and microwave, along with an assortment of crockery and cutlery and two picnic tables for sitting down together. The camp kitchen is also home to one of the park's three BBQs, with two more BBQs located elsewhere around Austin.

So whether you're cooking breakfast before heading out for the day or finishing an adventure with a relaxed BBQ dinner, there are options around the park.

Laundry image
Laundry
Laundry

BECAUSE ADVENTURES GET MESSY

Road trips have a remarkable ability to generate washing.  Our guest laundry has three washing machines and two gas dryers, along with an iron, ironing board and nearby clotheslines.

The gas dryers are worth knowing about too...they heat quickly and can get the washing dry faster, which is rather useful when you don't want tomorrow's adventure to involve waiting for socks.

Laundry powder is available from the office if you've run out or forgotten to pack it. And the laundry is accessible 24 hours a day. Because sometimes you're staying with us for a week and doing the sensible holiday washing. And sometimes you're a parent dealing with a spectacular mess at 2am. We've got you.

Pool image
Pool
Pool

A Dip in the Pool

After a day exploring Tamworth — or instead of exploring Tamworth — there's always the pool.

Our fenced outdoor swimming pool has seating and some shade around the pool area, plus a separate children's wading pool for our smaller swimmers.

There are also pool games available for a little extra fun.

There's no rigid “everybody out, the pool is closed” time. Guests can enjoy the pool when it suits, provided everyone is considerate of the people staying and living around them.

So yes, an evening swim is perfectly fine.

And if you decide to skinny dip at midnight, just try not to wake the residents. What happens on holidays stays on holidays!

Playground image
Playground
Playground

Playground & space to play

Sometimes adventures happen without leaving Austin.

Our playground gives younger guests somewhere to climb, play and make new friends, while our pedal carts have a habit of becoming popular with considerably more than one age group.

There's also open space around the park to enjoy between adventures.

Our Village Green is developing into a gathering and events space and is already used for some of the activities and special events we hold throughout the year.

Keep an eye on what's happening while you're staying. You never quite know what might be going on at Austin.

Powered Sites image
Powered Sites
Powered Sites

Powered sites

Every one of our powered caravan and camping sites has access to power, water and sullage, making it easy to settle in and get your setup sorted.

A small number of sites also have concrete slabs.

Site sizes and layouts vary, so if you've got a larger rig, a particular setup or something specific you need from your site, tell us when you're booking.

Knowing what you're travelling in helps us find the best fit.

Wi-Fi image
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi

Stay connected... mostly

Let's talk about Wi-Fi. Because we'd rather tell you how it actually is. We currently have two areas within Austin Tourist Park where we're confident of a good Wi-Fi signal.

Beyond those areas, reception varies depending on where you're staying in the park. Sometimes it's good. Sometimes it's not. Sometimes technology apparently has other ideas.

If reliable Wi-Fi is particularly important during your stay, tell us when you're booking. We can explain where our strongest coverage is and help you choose accordingly where availability allows. And yes — improving connectivity around the park remains on our list.

EV Charging image
EV Charging
EV Charging

Charge up for the next adventure

Travelling electric? Austin Tourist Park has two operational EV charging points, so you can recharge your electric vehicle while you're staying with us.

Ask our team about using the chargers when you arrive, or let us know you're travelling with an EV when you book. One less thing to organise while you're on the road.

The Practical Stuff image

The Practical Stuff

The practical stuff

There are a few facilities nobody gets particularly excited about until they need them. We have those too. There's an onsite dump point for caravan and motorhome travellers, and LPG Swap'n'Go is available when the gas bottle is getting suspiciously light.

You'll also find clotheslines around the laundry area, BBQs around the park and our team in the office when you need some local information, directions or help working something out.

Practical? Absolutely. But practical makes travelling easier.

Accessibility image
Accessibility
Accessibility

Accessibility & individual needs

No two travellers need exactly the same thing.

Rather than making broad promises about accessibility that may not suit your individual circumstances, we'd prefer to have a conversation. If you have mobility, accessibility or other specific requirements, contact our team before booking.

Tell us what you need — access, bathroom facilities, parking, distances, site location or something else — and we'll give you honest information about what's available so you can decide whether Austin will work for you. If we can help, we will.

Little Things image
Little Things
Little Things

Little things that make a difference

We reckon travelling and caring for the places we live and visit can go hand in hand. Around Austin, we separate waste through our four-bin system, helping divert recycling and eligible containers from general waste.

Used guest soaps don't simply head for landfill either. Through Soap Aid, they can be collected and recycled into new soap, supporting better hygiene while reducing waste.

We also find new homes for useful things wherever we can. Glass jars, sauce bottles, clothing and other items left behind can be passed through local community connections rather than simply being thrown away. They're not enormous gestures. They're lots of little ones. And over time, little things add up.

ATTRACTIONS

Start your adventure in Tamworth

You don't need to travel far to start making memories. Why not choose your own family adventure?

Some of the best family memories don't happen at one attraction. They happen over a whole day.

The thing nobody expected to find interesting. The picnic with a view. The photo that makes everyone laugh. The little challenge somebody took far too seriously. The ice cream on the way home. So pack some snacks, charge the phones, grab the camera and choose your adventure.

These aren't rigid itineraries. Pick the bits your family will enjoy, skip the ones they won't and take your time.

And when it's time to head home? You can always take the highway.

Or you can take a Frank Road.

First stop:

the Big Golden Guitar.

It's 12 metres tall, unmistakably Tamworth
and one of those photos you really do need to get while you're here.

Everyone lined up nicely is one option.

We're quite supportive of ridiculous poses too.

While you're there, country music fans can explore the National Guitar Museum and Country Music Wax Museum.

Try your hand at country music history image

Head into town and find Hands of Fame Park, where the handprints of Australian country music artists are set into concrete.

Then start comparing.

Who has the closest match? Who has surprisingly enormous hands? Can the kids find one that fits?

It's simple, free and something everyone can do together.

DISCOVER TAMWORTH

The First City of Light

For families who like discovering how things work, head to the Tamworth Powerstation Museum.

Tamworth became the first municipality in Australia to use electric street lighting in 1888, and the museum tells that story through its collection of electrical equipment, machinery and working engines.

History, engineering and some rather impressive machinery all in one place.

Meet some Australian locals

Meet some Australian locals

At Tamworth Marsupial Park, wander through the bushland and meet native Australian animals and birds.

There's also an adventure playground, so families with younger adventurers can make a good morning or afternoon of it.

Entry is free, with donations welcomed to help support the park.

Go big at the playground image

GO BIG AT THE PLAYGROUND

A Place to Play

If playing is today's adventure, Tamworth Regional Playground in Kable Avenue is worth a visit. It's a large destination playground with plenty to explore across different ages and abilities.

Pack some water, find yourself a spot and let the adventure unfold.

Watch the sun go down together image
Watch the sun go down together

Watch the sun go down together

Finish the day at Oxley Scenic Lookout, overlooking Tamworth and the Peel River Valley.

Our tip?

Go for sunset.

Try to arrive around 10–15 minutes before the sun disappears and bring the camera.

And don't be disappointed if there's a bit of cloud around. A little cloud cover can make the colours even better.

Don't rush off the moment the sun drops below the horizon either. Sometimes the best colour comes just afterwards.

Find a spot, enjoy the view and watch another day of your family adventure come to an end.

Adventure One: Memories, Mysteries & Sunflowers image
Adventure One: Memories, Mysteries & Sunflowers

Adventure One: Memories, Mysteries & Sunflowers

ADVENTURE ONE

Memories, Mysteries & Sunflowers

Head south from Tamworth towards Werris Creek, where the historic railway station and Australian Railway Monument and Rail Journeys Museum tell the story of a town built around the railway. Then it's on to Quirindi and one of our favourites — Bob's Shed.

Bob liked collecting things. And then he kept collecting. Today the place is packed with memorabilia, vehicles, motoring history and everyday objects from another time. Make a game of it. Find something Grandma or Grandad remembers. Something the younger members of the family have absolutely no idea how to use. The strangest thing in the collection. Or the thing everyone would most like to take home. And then there are the biscuit tins. There are a lot of biscuit tins.

When everyone's ready for lunch, head up to Who'd A Thought It Lookout, unpack the picnic and enjoy the view across the Liverpool Plains. Then choose what happens next.

If the sunflowers are flowering, go hunting for those spectacular splashes of yellow across the Plains. If they're not, that's okay. Explore a little more, head towards Wallabadah or simply start meandering home.

The adventure isn't about ticking everything off. It's about what you find along the way.

Adventure Two: Art, Waterfalls & Ice Cream image
Adventure Two: Art, Waterfalls & Ice Cream

Adventure Two: Art, Waterfalls & Ice Cream

ADVENTURE TWO

Art, Waterfalls & Ice Cream

Point the car north-west and head for Barraba. You'll have no trouble finding The Water Diviner, the enormous silo mural overlooking town. But that's only the beginning. Park the car and explore. How much street art can you find? Which piece is everyone's favourite? Who spots something nobody else noticed?

Then head towards Horton Falls and unpack the picnic for some time outdoors. After lunch, it's time to choose your way home. You could take the straightforward route. Or you could choose your own adventure. Take a Frank Road. Ask us about Oakhampton Road, running between Split Rock Dam Road and Red Hill. It's the more interesting option, taking you through some beautiful country and towards Split Rock Dam.

Frank Roads aren't about arriving sooner. They're about seeing what you'd miss if you always took the highway. Road conditions can change, particularly after wet weather, so check with us before setting out and make sure the route suits your vehicle and your family.

From Split Rock, continue towards Manilla. By this stage, there's really only one sensible thing to do. Get ice creams. Take them down to the weir, find somewhere to sit and enjoy some downtime together. Then there's one final family challenge before heading back to Austin. Can you find Manilla's old curved timber railway viaduct? Found it? Good. Now see if you can find the steel bridge. Then you can head home. Probably.

Adventure Three: Art, Lookouts & Biscuit Tins image
Adventure Three: Art, Lookouts & Biscuit Tins

Adventure Three: Art, Lookouts & Biscuit Tins

ADVENTURE THREE

Art, Lookouts & Biscuit Tins

Head west towards Gunnedah for a day of art, history, exploring and some very important biscuit-tin counting. Start hunting down the town's water tower murals, silo art, street art and sculptures.

Then explore the Gunnedah Rural Museum, where a huge collection tells stories of farming, machinery, households and everyday life from another time. And somewhere among all of that... There are biscuit tins. Lots of them. So here's the challenge: How many can your family count? We'll expect a report when you get back.

Stop at the Visitor Information Centre and check out the water feature, then head towards Gunnedah's two lookouts. Choose your favourite, unpack the picnic and enjoy lunch with a view. Afterwards, you've got another decision to make. Highway or Frank Road?

The highway will get you towards Lake Keepit. But there's another way. Ask us about heading out of Gunnedah via Kelvin Road, turning onto Orange Grove Road and following the country road through towards Lake Keepit. There's a cracking view of the lake along the way, and suddenly the drive home becomes part of the adventure too. Some sections may be unsealed and country-road conditions can change, so check with us before heading out.

Once you've explored Lake Keepit, continue towards Manilla. Then it's time for another difficult family decision. Ice cream at the weir or treats from the bakery? We're not entirely sure those options are mutually exclusive. You're on holidays.

Feel like playing?

Not every adventure needs to be educational, scenic or culturally enriching. Sometimes you just want to play.

Tamworth has escape rooms, ten-pin bowling, arcade games and the cinema, giving families plenty of options when you feel like doing something together — and some very useful Plan Bs when the weather isn't cooperating. For younger adventurers, there's also Inflatable World when bouncing, climbing and generally throwing themselves around sounds like an excellent use of an afternoon.

And if you're travelling with teenagers — otherwise known as wallet eaters — let them choose an adventure. Escape Room? Bowling? Arcade? Movies?

Everyone joins in. You may discover someone in the family is far more competitive than previously thought.

[Family] Feel like playing? image

The highway isn't the only way

That's something Frank has taught us over the years.
Sometimes the quickest way home is exactly what you need.

Other times, you've got daylight left, nobody's in a hurry and there's an interesting-looking road disappearing over the hill.

Those are the days for a Frank Road.

Some are sealed. Some aren't. Some are easy scenic alternatives. Others need a little more confidence on country roads. So come and talk to us before you go.

Tell us who's coming, what you're driving, how much time you've got and how adventurous the family is feeling. Then make your choice.

Take the highway. Or choose your own adventure.

And sometimes the adventure happens at Austin

Not every family memory needs a destination.

Back at Austin, there's still time for a swim in the pool, a play at the playground or a lap — or twelve — around on one of our pedal carts.

The kids might find someone new to play with. Someone might start a game. Dinner might be sausages cooked on the BBQ.

Or everyone might sit outside the cabin or caravan talking about what happened that day.

Sometimes the thing everyone remembers isn't the attraction you planned. It's everything that happened around it.

[Family] And sometimes the adventure happens at Austin image

What if it's raining?

Every good adventure needs a Plan B.

If the weather isn't cooperating, Tamworth still has plenty of options. Try an escape room, challenge each other to ten-pin bowling, hit the arcade, catch a movie, or explore one of Tamworth's museums. For families with younger adventurers, Inflatable World can be another option for an indoor adventure.

And if it's absolutely bucketing down? There's nothing wrong with heading back to Austin, getting comfortable and declaring the afternoon cancelled.

That's a family holiday too.

FAQs

Questions

Most visitors ask the same things. We've answered them here for you.

What are the best family attractions in Tamworth?

It depends on what your family enjoys.

For an easy Tamworth adventure, we'd combine places such as the Big Golden Guitar, Hands of Fame Park, Tamworth Marsupial Park, Tamworth Regional Playground and Oxley Scenic Lookout.

Families interested in history and how things work should also consider the Tamworth Powerstation Museum.

What can families with teenagers do in Tamworth?

Tamworth has plenty for older children and teenagers, including escape rooms, ten-pin bowling, arcade games and movies.

But don't assume teenagers won't enjoy the regional adventures too. Street art, silo art, Bob's Shed, photography, lookouts and choosing the day's route can give everyone something to get involved in.

Let the wallet eaters choose occasionally.

You might be surprised.

Are there free family activities in Tamworth?

Yes.

Hands of Fame Park, Tamworth Marsupial Park, Tamworth Regional Playground, the Big Golden Guitar photo stop and Oxley Scenic Lookout are some good places to start.

A picnic and a regional drive can also make a great family day without needing an admission ticket at every stop.

What are some good family day trips from Tamworth?

The Liverpool Plains, Barraba and Manilla, and Gunnedah and Lake Keepit all make excellent family adventures from Tamworth.

Rather than simply driving to one attraction and back, we like building a few discoveries, a picnic stop and something fun into the day.

Ask our team for ideas when you arrive.

Where is a good place to watch sunset with the family in Tamworth?

We'd choose Oxley Scenic Lookout.

Try arriving around 10–15 minutes before sunset and stay for a little while after the sun disappears. If there's some cloud around, you may get even better colour.

Take the camera.

Is Austin Tourist Park good for families?

We reckon so.

Austin Tourist Park offers cabins, powered sites and unpowered camping sites in Tamworth, with a swimming pool, playground, pedal carts, camp kitchen and BBQ facilities to enjoy between adventures.

The best souvenir is the story

Years from now, you probably won't remember exactly what time you arrived somewhere.
The kids won't remember how efficiently you packed the car. Nobody is going to reminisce about the beautifully organised itinerary.

But you might remember the ridiculous photo beside the Big Chook.

The biscuit-tin challenge. The sunset. The dirt road. The ice creams beside the weir. The thing someone discovered at Bob's Shed.

Or the pedal-cart race back at Austin that became considerably more competitive than expected.

Those are the souvenirs you don't have to pack.

So choose an adventure. Make it your own. And make some memories together.
