WHAT WE OFFER

For the solo traveller or couple

Your road. Your pace. Your adventure.

Travelling on your own or taking your time around Australia?
Austin makes an easy home base for a few nights — or a little longer.

Settle into a powered or unpowered site, get the washing done, recharge yourself (and the vehicle, if needed), then decide where tomorrow takes you.

We're close to Tamworth's attractions, shops and services, with plenty of country waiting beyond the city limits. If you're looking for a day trip, a scenic drive or a road that is considerably more interesting than the highway, come and have a chat with us.

Our team knows the region, and Frank knows more back roads than is probably reasonable.

Stay for the night. Stay for a while.

Then choose your next adventure.

Why stay at Austin?

A practical base

Powered and unpowered sites, amenities, laundry, camp kitchen, dump point, LPG Swap'n'Go and EV charging.

Room to slow down

Settle in, have a swim, cook a BBQ or simply enjoy an afternoon without an itinerary.

Local knowledge from actual locals

Ask us where to go, what to see and which road we'd take.

Explore in every direction

Tamworth is a great base for day trips through the New England, North West and Liverpool Plains.

Travelling solo? You're still part of the conversation

We're always happy to have a chat, offer a suggestion or help when you need it.

Frank Roads

Because sometimes the highway will get you there, but another road will give you a better story.

There's something pretty wonderful about travelling under your own steam.

Follow the itinerary. Change the itinerary. Stay another night because you've discovered there's more to explore. Or look at the map over breakfast and decide today's a good day to head in a completely different direction.

At Austin Tourist Park, we're big fans of that kind of travel. We're an independently operated, family-owned tourist park beside the Peel River in Tamworth, NSW, and we've been welcoming road travellers since 1982.

Whether you're travelling solo, touring as a couple, doing the big lap, following the seasons or simply seeing where the road takes you, Austin makes a comfortable home base for exploring Tamworth, the New England and North West.

And if you haven't decided where you're going tomorrow? Even better.

ACCOMMODATIONS

A bed for everyone, and space to play.

FACILITIES

Park essentials

Everything you need for a comfortable stay

Amenities image
Amenities
Amenities

Amenities

Nobody wants to trek halfway across a caravan park when nature calls. With four amenities areas located around Austin Tourist Park, nowhere in the park is more than approximately 50 metres from an amenities block.

Our main amenities area includes separate men's and ladies' toilets and showers, as well as a family bathroom and our laundry. Around the park you'll also find additional men's and ladies' amenities and a small ensuite-style block with four individual bathrooms. Some facilities may not always be open, depending on park operations and works underway.

If you've got particular accessibility or bathroom requirements, have a chat with us before you arrive so we can help identify the most suitable accommodation or site location for you.

Camp Kitchen image
Camp Kitchen

Camp Kitchen & BBQs

Sometimes dinner needs to be an event.
Other times it needs to be sausages on the BBQ and done.

Our camp kitchen gives caravan and camping guests a handy place to prepare a meal without having to unpack half the van. You'll find a fridge, freezer and microwave, along with an assortment of crockery and cutlery and two picnic tables for sitting down together. The camp kitchen is also home to one of the park's three BBQs, with two more BBQs located elsewhere around Austin.

So whether you're cooking breakfast before heading out for the day or finishing an adventure with a relaxed BBQ dinner, there are options around the park.

Laundry image
Laundry
Laundry

BECAUSE ADVENTURES GET MESSY

Road trips have a remarkable ability to generate washing.  Our guest laundry has three washing machines and two gas dryers, along with an iron, ironing board and nearby clotheslines.

The gas dryers are worth knowing about too...they heat quickly and can get the washing dry faster, which is rather useful when you don't want tomorrow's adventure to involve waiting for socks.

Laundry powder is available from the office if you've run out or forgotten to pack it. And the laundry is accessible 24 hours a day. Because sometimes you're staying with us for a week and doing the sensible holiday washing. And sometimes you're a parent dealing with a spectacular mess at 2am. We've got you.

Pool image
Pool
Pool

A Dip in the Pool

After a day exploring Tamworth — or instead of exploring Tamworth — there's always the pool.

Our fenced outdoor swimming pool has seating and some shade around the pool area, plus a separate children's wading pool for our smaller swimmers.

There are also pool games available for a little extra fun.

There's no rigid “everybody out, the pool is closed” time. Guests can enjoy the pool when it suits, provided everyone is considerate of the people staying and living around them.

So yes, an evening swim is perfectly fine.

And if you decide to skinny dip at midnight, just try not to wake the residents. What happens on holidays stays on holidays!

Playground image
Playground
Playground

Playground & space to play

Sometimes adventures happen without leaving Austin.

Our playground gives younger guests somewhere to climb, play and make new friends, while our pedal carts have a habit of becoming popular with considerably more than one age group.

There's also open space around the park to enjoy between adventures.

Our Village Green is developing into a gathering and events space and is already used for some of the activities and special events we hold throughout the year.

Keep an eye on what's happening while you're staying. You never quite know what might be going on at Austin.

Powered Sites image
Powered Sites
Powered Sites

Powered sites

Every one of our powered caravan and camping sites has access to power, water and sullage, making it easy to settle in and get your setup sorted.

A small number of sites also have concrete slabs.

Site sizes and layouts vary, so if you've got a larger rig, a particular setup or something specific you need from your site, tell us when you're booking.

Knowing what you're travelling in helps us find the best fit.

Wi-Fi image
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi

Stay connected... mostly

Let's talk about Wi-Fi. Because we'd rather tell you how it actually is. We currently have two areas within Austin Tourist Park where we're confident of a good Wi-Fi signal.

Beyond those areas, reception varies depending on where you're staying in the park. Sometimes it's good. Sometimes it's not. Sometimes technology apparently has other ideas.

If reliable Wi-Fi is particularly important during your stay, tell us when you're booking. We can explain where our strongest coverage is and help you choose accordingly where availability allows. And yes — improving connectivity around the park remains on our list.

EV Charging image
EV Charging
EV Charging

Charge up for the next adventure

Travelling electric? Austin Tourist Park has two operational EV charging points, so you can recharge your electric vehicle while you're staying with us.

Ask our team about using the chargers when you arrive, or let us know you're travelling with an EV when you book. One less thing to organise while you're on the road.

The Practical Stuff image
The Practical Stuff
The Practical Stuff

The practical stuff

There are a few facilities nobody gets particularly excited about until they need them. We have those too. There's an onsite dump point for caravan and motorhome travellers, and LPG Swap'n'Go is available when the gas bottle is getting suspiciously light.

You'll also find clotheslines around the laundry area, BBQs around the park and our team in the office when you need some local information, directions or help working something out.

Practical? Absolutely. But practical makes travelling easier.

Accessibility image
Accessibility
Accessibility

Accessibility & individual needs

No two travellers need exactly the same thing.

Rather than making broad promises about accessibility that may not suit your individual circumstances, we'd prefer to have a conversation. If you have mobility, accessibility or other specific requirements, contact our team before booking.

Tell us what you need — access, bathroom facilities, parking, distances, site location or something else — and we'll give you honest information about what's available so you can decide whether Austin will work for you. If we can help, we will.

Little Things image
Little Things
Little Things

Little things that make a difference

We reckon travelling and caring for the places we live and visit can go hand in hand. Around Austin, we separate waste through our four-bin system, helping divert recycling and eligible containers from general waste.

Used guest soaps don't simply head for landfill either. Through Soap Aid, they can be collected and recycled into new soap, supporting better hygiene while reducing waste.

We also find new homes for useful things wherever we can. Glass jars, sauce bottles, clothing and other items left behind can be passed through local community connections rather than simply being thrown away. They're not enormous gestures. They're lots of little ones. And over time, little things add up.

ATTRACTIONS

Things to see and do for the solo traveller or couple

Start with Tamworth.
Before heading out into the countryside, give yourself some time to explore our home town.

Of course, there's the Big Golden Guitar. Standing 12 metres high, it's one of Australia's best-known Big Things and pretty much the obligatory Tamworth photo. Country music fans can keep exploring at the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame, National Guitar Museum and Country Music Wax Museum, or wander through Hands of Fame Park and compare their hands with the handprints of some familiar names. But Tamworth's story goes well beyond country music.

If you enjoy history, machinery or engineering, make time for the Tamworth Powerstation Museum. Tamworth became the first town in Australia to use electric street lighting in 1888, and the museum tells the story of the city that became known as the First City of Light. Then there's Oxley Scenic Lookout, overlooking Tamworth and the Peel River Valley.

Our tip? Go for sunset. Try to arrive around 10–15 minutes before the sun disappears. You'll get some cracking views across the valley, and if there's a little cloud around, even better — it can make the colours spectacular. Take the camera and don't necessarily leave as soon as the sun drops below the horizon. Sometimes the best colour comes afterwards.

Got another day? Good. Pick a direction.

One of the best things about using Tamworth as your home base is just how different the country becomes depending on which way you point the car. You don't need an enormous itinerary.

Choose a direction below, give yourself the day and see what's out there.

Three for the bucket list

Hanging Rock, Barraba/Manilla, and Walcha.

Still can't decide? If we were picking three experiences particularly worth adding to a road-traveller's list, these would be strong contenders.

North — Moonbi & Bendemeer image
North — Moonbi & Bendemeer

North — Moonbi & Bendemeer

Head north through Kootingal and stop at Moonbi for one of our more unusual local landmarks — the Big Chook.

It's quirky, it's enormous and, let's face it, you're probably going to take a photo.

Continue through the Moonbi Ranges and stop at Moonbi Lookout before heading on to Bendemeer.

This is an easy adventure when you feel like a drive through the New England countryside without needing to plan every minute of the day.

Find somewhere for lunch, have a wander and take your time.

North West - Manilla, Split Rock & Barraba image
North West - Manilla, Split Rock & Barraba

North West - Manilla, Split Rock & Barraba

If heritage, art, photography and country scenery sound more your speed, head northwest.

Manilla has plenty of history to discover, including Royce Cottage and some fascinating old railway infrastructure.

From there, you can head towards Split Rock Dam or continue north to Barraba.

You'll have no trouble spotting Barraba's enormous Water Diviner silo mural, but don't make the mistake of photographing the silos and immediately turning around. There's some really cool street and public art around town, along with heritage buildings, galleries and plenty to discover on foot.

And keep the camera handy on the drive.

Some of the countryside out that way is just as worthy of a photo as the art.

West — Lake Keepit & Gunnedah image
West — Lake Keepit & Gunnedah

West — Lake Keepit & Gunnedah

Head west and you've got the makings of another cracking day out.

Take in Lake Keepit, find yourself a country lunch along the way and continue towards Gunnedah.

Gunnedah has become something of an outdoor gallery, with silo art, water tower murals, street art and sculptures to find around town.

It's also the home of poet Dorothea Mackellar, best known for My Country and those famous words about loving a sunburnt country and a land of sweeping plains.

Then go and see some of those sweeping plains.

Gunnedah has two great lookouts - one overlooking the town and another looking out across the Liverpool Plains.

Art, literature, landscape and a country drive.

Not a bad way to spend a day.

South — Werris Creek, Quirindi & the Liverpool Plains image
South — Werris Creek, Quirindi & the Liverpool Plains

South — Werris Creek, Quirindi & the Liverpool Plains

If railway history, nostalgia and country towns are your thing, point yourself south.

At Werris Creek, explore the Australian Railway Monument and Rail Journeys Museum at the historic railway station before continuing further into the Liverpool Plains.

Then make time for Quirindi. There's silo and street art, cattle brands through town, Who'd A Thought It Lookout and one of our favourite slightly unexpected discoveries...Bob's Shed.

Bob liked collecting things. And then he kept collecting. The result is one of those places where you'll spot something and suddenly hear yourself saying, “Oh! We had one of those!” There's an old-fashioned general store filled with genuine items from the 1940s and 50s, historic memorabilia, vehicles, motoring history and an impressive collection celebrating Australian motor racing legend Peter Brock. Allow longer than you think.

From Quirindi, you can continue towards Wallabadah to explore the First Fleet Memorial Gardens or wander through Willow Tree before heading back towards Tamworth.

If you're travelling at the right time of year, keep an eye out for the Liverpool Plains sunflower season. When they're flowering, they're quite a sight. Ask us what's happening before you head out.

South East — Nundle & Hanging Rock image
South East — Nundle & Hanging Rock

South East — Nundle & Hanging Rock

If you've only got time for one regional day trip, Nundle and Hanging Rock deserve serious consideration.

Nundle is one of those little towns where it's very easy to spend considerably longer than you planned.

Explore its gold-rush history, wander through the village, visit the Nundle Woollen Mill, stop for lunch and perhaps even try your luck fossicking.

Then head up towards Hanging Rock Lookout.

The scenery changes as you climb and the views from the top are well worth the drive.

Depending on how much time you've got, you can add Sheba Dams or Chaffey Dam to the adventure.

Take a picnic. Take the camera.

Most importantly, take your time.

East — Walcha & the Waterfalls image
East — Walcha & the Waterfalls

East — Walcha & the Waterfalls

EAST, WALCHA & THE WATERFALLS

Give yourself most of the day for this one

Head through Kootingal, Moonbi and Bendemeer before turning towards Walcha. Walcha is filled with outdoor art and sculptures, so it's worth getting out of the car and having a proper wander. Keep an eye out for the landlocked whale - a sculpture that appears to be breaching straight out of the ground.

Then head beyond town into the spectacular landscapes of Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, where Apsley Falls and Tia Falls make this a particularly good adventure for anyone who loves waterfalls, gorges, photography and big country.

Then you've got a decision to make. Take the straightforward road home.

There are Frank Roads image
There are Frank Roads

There are Frank Roads

There are highways that get you from A to B. And then there are the roads Frank takes.

Frank has been exploring the roads around Tamworth, the New England and North West for more than 40 years. Ask him how to get somewhere and there's a reasonable chance his answer includes a road you hadn't noticed on the map.

We call them Frank Roads.

Some are simply beautiful alternatives to the highway. Others involve dirt. Some involve quite a lot of dirt. And occasionally the description includes phrases like “a little narrow” or “windy for a bit.”

Frank Roads aren't about getting somewhere quickly. They're about pretty countryside, unexpected views, photography stops, little towns and seeing parts of the region you'd otherwise drive straight past.

They're also not suitable for everyone. Road surfaces and conditions can change, particularly after rain, and some routes may not suit caravans, larger motorhomes or drivers who aren't comfortable on narrow or unsealed country roads.

So don't blindly follow a Frank Road you've heard about.

Come and have a chat with us first.

Tell us what you're driving, how much time you've got and how adventurous you're feeling.

We'll see where we can send you.

Bob's Shed — Quirindi image
Bob's Shed — Quirindi

Bob's Shed — Quirindi

QUIRINDI

Bob's Shed.

For the memories.

This isn't a polished museum where everything sits neatly behind glass.

That's part of the fun. Bob's Shed grew from one bloke's love of collecting, and today it's packed with memories, memorabilia, vehicles and everyday objects from another time. You'll probably recognise something. Then someone else will recognise something. Then you'll start talking about who had one, where it lived and what happened to it.

And suddenly you've been there considerably longer than planned.

That's Bob's Shed.

Apsley Falls — near Walcha image
Apsley Falls — near Walcha

Apsley Falls — near Walcha

APSLEY FALLS - NEAR WALCHA

Big landscapes & scenery

If you love big landscapes, take the drive to Apsley Falls.

Set within Oxley Wild Rivers National Park near Walcha, the falls plunge into a dramatic gorge surrounded by New England wilderness. It's far enough from Tamworth to feel like you've had a proper adventure, but close enough to make a great day trip from Austin.

Charge the camera.

Nundle & Hanging Rock image
Nundle & Hanging Rock

Nundle & Hanging Rock

For the whole day out.

We know this is technically more than one place.

We're counting it anyway.

Nundle and Hanging Rock combine history, scenery, food, shopping, fossicking, the Woollen Mill, mountain country and one very good lookout into an easy day trip from Tamworth.

You can plan the whole day.

Or just point the car towards Nundle and work it out when you get there.

Both approaches work.

Travelling solo?

One of the joys of travelling solo is being able to do things entirely your way.

But sometimes it's also nice to arrive somewhere and have someone say g'day.

You won't disappear into the booking system at Austin. Our team is around if you'd like some local knowledge, practical help, another opinion about tomorrow's route or simply a friendly conversation.

If you're heading out for the day and want to know whether somewhere is worth the detour, ask us.

If you're wondering where you might find a good lunch, ask us. If you're not quite sure about a road, definitely ask us.

And if you've just driven an absolutely cracking road that Frank doesn't know about? Please tell him.

You may have accidentally created the next Frank Road. Ask Frank.

PARK MAP

Discover what's where in the Park

Solo or Couple background image

Stay another day. There's another direction.

That's the trouble with making Tamworth your home base. There's always another direction to explore.

Spend today discovering Tamworth. Tomorrow could be Nundle. Then perhaps Barraba. Gunnedah. The Liverpool Plains. Walcha. Or maybe tomorrow's adventure is considerably smaller.

Have a sleep-in. Put the kettle on. Catch up on the washing. Read a book. Sit beside the Peel River and decide over breakfast whether you're going anywhere at all.

That's the beauty of travelling this way. Your road. Your pace. Your adventure.

And whenever you're ready to find the next one, come and have a chat. We're pretty good at roads.
